ABOUT  CITY  OF  CALCUTTA

Calcutta, the second  most populous city  in the  world, situated on the eastern side of river  Hooghly,  is the   capital

of the State of West Bengal. On August 24, 1690, an Englishman, Job Charnock, made a mid-day halt on  his travels

and since his stopover a city grew, became a city of palaces bustling with trade, shimmering with colours and jewels.

Once the second city of British empire and  the  grandest city ever built by Europeans outside Europe,Calcultta was

the capital  of   British   India  till 1911.The city still  remains  the cultural  and   intellectual  capital  of  India with her

communities  from  all    over  the  sub-continent. The city  is  a   standing  museum of  300  years  architecture  with

           great variety of styles.
